Waiting For That Rocket

Labor Day Weekend was created for the working class. It was unions striking for the working class. It was about acknowledging the contributions blue collar workers made.

Much has changed over the past hundred forty years. Labor Day is no longer a singular day it’s now a three day weekend thanks to George H. W. Bush in 1988. What I read was interesting because it commented on most workers not working on Saturday and Sunday so it being a three day weekend that way. But that’s ignoring that the blue collar workers the holiday was created for are still working on the weekends. It’s white collar workers that have weekends off. Not people working in grocery stores, restaurants, coffeeshops, or, or, or. At the very least for those who work on Labor Day we’re paid time and a half, and that in some ways compensates for our contributions, but it ignores the origins of the day.

My coworkers are still working today, I’m still able to go to a coffeeshop to use their wifi, heck, I’m not working today (though that’s by chance not by having the holiday off).

This post is just a reminder that America would be nothing without the working class. If we all called out today because of the holiday nothing would happen in this country. So keep your working class friends in mind today. Celebrate Time and a Half Day, but don’t just celebrate the three day weekend, because those the day was created for are likely working today anyway.
